Making Money Online SUCKS!!

October 7, 2008

Mindset

Ok, I know that you don’t expect to see an article on a blog that is supposed to teach you how to make money entitled “Making Money Online SUCKS!!” Ok, I’ll be honest. That was just my way of peaking your curiosity and getting you to click on the article. On the contrary, making money online does NOT suck. It can actually be quite liberating and enjoyable.

That being said, Making Money can suck IF it is at too high a cost. Many people spend fortunes in a pursuit of financial freedom – not just in terms of cash invested, but also in time invested. They purchase every information product out there, spend countless hours in front of the computer. Their Spouses and kids seem to be a distraction from their computers. The most important thing in life to them is making a lot of money.

If you are finding yourself reaching a point where all of your energy is spent trying to make a dollar out of fifty cents, and would like a change, then I’m going to share a few things with you that I believe a very important and will (in my opinion) help you be even more successful.

Remember what REALLY matters

Many people start trying to make money online to try to correct their current financial situation. They are worried that with the failing economy as we see it today, they will not be able to provide for their families. At the heart of it all, it’s all about the people they LOVE. However, in an attempt to provide for the people we love, it is easy to loose focus on what is really important.

Why are you here? Why are you reading about making money? Is it because of your personal financial situation? Maybe you don’t really NEED the money, but you would just like to enhance your situation. If your end goal is Money and Money alone, then your goals are too low. When it’s all said and done, and your at the end of your life, what will really matter is NOT how much money you’ve made, but the relationships that you’ve nurtured.

Be disciplined

This is not something we enjoy hearing. The word discipline often has a negative connotation attached to it. However, it is something that is definitely necessary. There are some tasks that you have to do on a consistent basis in order to be successful, many of which might seem mundane. Do those tasks consistently.

However, that is not the discipline I’m talking about right now. This is a different type of discipline. It is the discipline to say that enough is enough. It is the discipline that warrants you setting aside time to spend with the people you care about. Your family matters, so make sure they know, understand and feel that.

Be Lucky

Many people believe that in order to make money online, you need to be lucky. I tend to agree with that. However, there’s a difference between my definition of luck and the average person’s definition of luck.

Luck is when Preparedness meets Opportunity

I’m not sure who said that, but it’s something that has stuck with me from my early college days. Many people look at others who are financially successful and say that they are “lucky”. They look at the idea of financial success as some distant goal that they will never be able to achieve. For the person that says that, it is a very true statement.

On the other hand, there are people like me, and hopefully you. We see financial success as a goal that can be accomplished. We do the research, learn the strategies, and take action. By educating ourselves, we change our reality. We take risks and implement what we’ve learnt. By preparing ourselves mentally and emotionally, we are ready for when the golden opportunities present themselves. We recognize those opportunities because of the preparation that has already taken place.

If you are that person, I commend you. You are on the right track. Keep doing what you are doing right now. By reading this blog, you are preparing yourself for the opportunities that will come your way. Continue doing your research. Your “Luck” will come!

People are your key to success

There is a lot to be said for helping others. The key to being a true success (online or offline) is to help others to succeed. This “giving mentality” is one that will pay off many times over. Remember, the people you help are people whose lives you have had an impact on. And when it’s all said and done, these are the things that really matter.

Treat people with respect. Every person has significant intrinsic value. Show them that you believe that they are worth your time. This is something that will pay off many times over – sometimes monetarily, and sometimes in other ways.

So lets get back to the title of this article. Making Money Online is Great! It really doesn’t suck. However, it is very important to have balance and keep things in perspective. Remember, at the end of your life, you can’t take your money with you. But your character can live on in the hearts and minds of others.

Hi Leslie,
I found your blog post to be refreshing. "People are your key to success" is one of the simplest-but most important rules to live by.

I subscribe to your podcast and blog to learn about developing web marketing skills from somone who makes this process accessible and easy to understand. I was not surprised to learn that you are a teacher. I hope my grandkids-I'm a few years older than you are- are lucky enough to have a biology teacher with your combination of teaching skills and passion for the subject.

Thanks for your feedback Bob. Glad to know that you are enjoying the podcast and other content from my blog. What you said is exactly what I've been trying to accomplish.

Wishing you all the best with your internet marketing efforts. Stay tuned for more great content.

Comments all well taken. I've been self employed for many years and I know all about balance (still trying to find it) and right now I am balancing too many things. I am in the middle of something similar to Yaro right now (Mom had a stroke) and that is a job in itself. Balance tends to go out the window when a loved one is sick. I'm putting that first (which is why I haven't kept up with everything) which I suppose means I am balancing things properly? Very difficult.

Thanks for all your comments and I'll keep following.
BTW it's "piquing" curiosity.

Ahh man, I know how that is. My dad was in a hospital in Colombia in May and I had to drop everything and go down there to spend a month taking care of him. That definitely makes balance more complicated. I wish you all the best!

I lick your lucky concept man. otherwise am just in article marketing now. not website monetization though your lessons are very practical and real!

It's about having "BALANCE" in your life. If you are too focused on one thing (money), other important things in your life will suffer (health, family, spiritual).

Very true. Balance is what it all boils down to. I agree with you fully Patrick :)

A very nice reminder Leslie why I got into this business-to make a better future for my family-, and not to ignore them along the way.
As you say it is so easy to sit in front of this computer and pour my heart and soul into it but if I am letting my life drift on past while I am doing that, is it worth it? Definitely not.
Cheers
Joy

Yep, it's always good to remind ourselves that. Thanks for the comment. Wishing you all the best with your online pursuits :)

Beautiful. How many times I've felt this way. To many things to get done, to many passwords, numbers, places to be, events, gotta get this all done by........Forgetting who and what matters. Thanks for the reminder.

Glad to know that you identified with this post. It's something I keep having to remind myself too :)

Hey Leslie,

I've thought about this for a long time.
This has been how I have tried to be
with my Family even before I began
to Blog. Thanks for sharing this with
all of us.

Gary,

Solid advice Leslie, too bad many people online didn't take this advice from the beginning. It could save alot of time and reach success online faster.

Remember, "at the end of your life, you can’t take your money with you. But your character can live on in the hearts and minds of others". What a nice sentence.
I can believe that money should not be the only target of our life and of course it is not the final target to which we are approaching. Money is only a channel we are adopting to approach to something. When this channel is important for approaching to the goal then money is important. If we want to judge our position in a competition, we should not look always to the people running faster than us. There are some people behind us who can not reach us. Let us Strengthen your hands for your good mission to educate the needy, look for a while behind us and try to help those who struggle to reach the winners.
Thank you very much. You are great.

Fab article. I am also at this for a long time- but my first eBook is comming out next week & although I am exhausted from all the late nights writing & researching & am nearly divorced from my internet marketing obsession(!) I can see where I am going. Also I feel so blessed to work in my niche (fertility)- yesterday 2 people contacted me to say that my blog was helping them with their baby making dreams.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Sarah Leather

Wow Sarah,

It's great when people contact you to let you know that what you are doing is helping. It makes you feel like all the hard work was worth it. Keep it up.

Also, I'm glad you can identify with this article. Making money online is definitely not worth your marriage. That's something I try to constantly remind yourself.

All the best in your pursuit for balance!

Enjoyed the article and liked the title. It does make one a bit curious and whatever it takes to get people to open up your email and read through. What you say is so true. It is not all abouat the money (hopefully that will come along) but it has got t be about something you care about.
Thanks for all you do.

Glad I can peak your curiosity Audrey :)

I agree with you. It's great to be able to do something you are passionate about.

All the best!

hi leslie thanks for the bootcamp and tutorials im still busy trying to eek out my rent for this little office i have will be applying your techniques soon i see how youve gained my trust and as an authority your lessons are YOU i get it thanks a million you give value jamie akaMONEYDON am looking to start in cali 101 if you own it do you ?

Hi James,

I'm glad you have found value in the training. Actually, I no longer own CaliStyle101. I've moved on from the Freebie Industry for a number of reasons.

Now, I focus on building my business and helping others do the same. The great thing about internet marketing is that you don't need an office or anything like that. All you need is a computer, internet connection and some time.

All the best with what you are doing!

They say success leaves trails. Your post definitely helps me cement stuff I have compiled and learned over the past three years of my blogging career.

I'm glad it can have that affect on you Sunganani. All the best in your blogging efforts!

Nice headline -- it catches my attention, huh! Anyway, I agree with your outlined tips. Thanks for this post -- I learn something.

Thanks for checking out my blog Maria and glad you find value in it. It's a great idea to stick with what you are doing and perfecting it before moving on to something else. I wish you all the best with what you do.

Hi OceanTiara, thanks for your input. However, I would suggest something else. The problem isn't necessarily the trials. It's the terms of service and educating yourself about the offer. I've done MANY trials online and haven't had any negative experiences because I looked through the terms and then did my research about the product. Some of those services I've kept because they turned out to be very valuable.

So whatever you do online, make sure you fully evaluate and understand what you are doing. All the best.

Good Advice Guy!
Hey I have a tip for everyone too...it goes like this..don't, I repeat, don't buy stuff as trials online, like free trails thinking they are not going to charge your card that very day because they DO! Magic Jack did that to me and now I am worried that my rent check is going to bounce, see?
I can't be homeless again!

This is a year ago but still holds true today. Keep up the good work. I like your site. I haven't read your Cheatsheets yet because I'm not ready for it yet. I am finishing an ebay site to get in ebay. Hope to finish today. After this ebay thing, then, I create sites for google adsense, sites for clickbank with cpa's together. After I'll hit my target, I'll try your freebie cheatsheets. I hope to do this after 3 months, from now. Anyway, your email to me is not in vain. I am collecting them on one folder so that once I'm ready I'll read them.

Great article. I truly appreciate that this site and all that you do place ethics and personal values first. Rare these days, and much needed

Nice reality check Leslie, thanks. I'm about to go offline for a while due to a relocation and you know what? I'm actually kind of looking forward to forgetting about the Internet for a while!

As always, good stuff ! If the journey is 9/10th's of the reward, then I am proud to be taking the journey with you ! Keep up the good work, and remember your words and your lessons reach untold #,s of people you will never know about. May your rewards be as fullfilling to you, as your message is to me and many others. Thank you, for you !

Leslie, I'm sure your heart is in the right place. And I'm currently trying to get up and running in the freebie market. For the last 9 months my business has been dying a slow death. Being 58 years old and facing this problem has not been easy. So I went online to get a new and fun business going. You're right is does suck ! In the last 6 months I 've spent over $5,000.00 and really don't have much to show for it . It really is a shame that the so called guru's aren't better teachers instead of a bunch of bottom feeders. You know real training happens when your clients learn and change. Lasting change. I recently read a report that said 85% of all online business is a rip off. What a shame. Anyway here I am trying to work the freebie business. Maybe this will work. Who knows !

Hi Dan, wow Dan, that's a lot of money. But I do understand. I've spent (and lost) money in the past, so I hear ya. However, there are some things that you can do that don't cost a bunch of money. The Freebie Industry is one of those where you can get in without a huge investment. I literally started with $3. So you can prove to yourself that it works. All the best in everything

Thanks for the reminder! It's very easy for me to get 'unbalanced' with all the new things I'm learning about marketing and promoting, the future is very exciting! I'm a single empty-nester so I can literally sit here as many hours as there are in a day; but that's BAD for me.

Thanks again. :)

I agree with you that, we need to be disciplined to set aside time for what is really important not just spending time on the computer but to make time for our friends and love ones too.

Leslie,

this is a great article and at the right moment. I only found out about freebie trading on March 3rd, 2009 (almost a month ago) and have been spending alot of time trying to learn, get things set up, etc. I have been spending far too much time in front of the computer trying to be successful at this freebie trading. Setting a plan of next tasks to focus on is key because it is very easy to have your attention diverted with things such as other money making opportunities, reading the forum, etc...

Also, setting a schedule in terms of how much time to spend online working on freebie trading is something I need to do as well - Need to ensure I don't neglect other parts of my life.

Thanks for a well timed article.

Leslie, I love this article, I have found myself spending too much time on the computer to make money & putting my family aside, when I get frustrated & guilty enough about that, then I just give up my online goals as they seem so out of reach, I thank you for this article this is something i am going thru currently, & this really helped, as it applies to my christian beliefs as well, & brings me back to a life of balance & rememberance of love for others, thanks so much, connie

"Don't wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. In the the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like and eagle." Proverbs 23:4-5

Thank you for the healty reminder that we all should remember about building up riches in heaven.

I remember the popular motivational speaker, Les Brown, once said regarding money that, "it's important that it not be important."
That idea has stayed with me for years.
For the past 3 years, I have been a temp looking for full-time work.
I have recently had the good fortune of working with an extended contract. Unfortunately, current economic conditions have forced them to invoke a hiring freeze and I will be out of work again in May.
If I had been working in a permanent full-time position, I probably would not spend my free time pursuing online money-making opportunities such as freebie trading but knowing that my tenure and income are finite has forced me to acknowledge my immediate financial vulnerabilities and I find my focus is quite often geared towards my earning goals... a steady income would be nice.
Having said that, I must also admit that it's important to me now to find a balance and continue to contribute to society by helping others because the danger of making money important is that if all that one values is lost, the emotional upheaval can be catastrophic.
I try to keep in mind that there are many that are far worse off than myself.
